Calming Treats

When the mom was searching for treats Oui Oui could eat that were similar to the ones to help Mica Minnie Moo calm down, the mom was surprised to find there were several treats on the market with almost the same composition as the Pet Naturals calming ones.  So in the interest of saving kitties those green paper thingies peeps gripe about, here goes:

Pet Naturals of Vermont Calming Treats
This is what we bought.  The active ingredients are:
Thiamine 31.25 mg
L-Theanine 10.56 mg
Colostrum Calming Complex 5.28 mg
There were 21 in the bag
Amazon has them for $5.02, and if you buy enough you can get super shipping.  You can also do a monthly plan and save 15% and shipping.  But if you look closely, they are as cheap as $2.69 + $2.25 shipping, which means you can save if you are buying multiple packs.  There are also 3 packs for $6.95.

Pawalla.com may have a case of six 21 chew bags for $5.99.  (I'd call first to make sure, but that is how it looks like it is written.)

(biggify if necessary)

The amazing thing is, the calming treats for small dogs is exactly the same as the cat treats, only shaped like a bone (the same price too).  The medium & large dog size has the exact same composition, but more of the active ingredients, so if you are giving your cat a couple a day, you might want to consider buying those and cutting them down.  They are:
Thiamine 134 mg
L-Theanine 22 mg
Colostrum 21 mg
The price is 60 chews (equal to 240 Pet Naturals) for $10.99

Vetri-Science Composure Feline
This has exactly the same inert ingredients in the same order as Pet Naturals, but more of the active ingredients:
Thiamine 67 mg
L-Theanine 10.5 mg
Colostrum 11 mg
Interestingly, this is half of what is in the medium/large dog chews and twice what is in the Pet Naturals (except for the L-Theanine),  So if you are giving your cat 2 of the Pet Naturals a day, you can give them half of one of these twice a day.
The price is 30 (equal to 60 Pet Naturals) for $5.43

What is best for you?  It depends on how much you use a day and how comfortable you are cutting chews down.  A pill cutter may help, if they aren't too big, but the chews are pretty soft and a knife should work just fine.

Also, it looks like Petco (PetSmart too I bet) carries these as well, so you might want to poke in the dog and cat aisles to see what is available, but they may sell them only online.  I didn't want to overwhelm peeps with even more numbers!

One last thought.  There are a couple other formulations as well.  Quiet Moments Calming Aid + Ginger has L-Tryptophan, Chamomile, Thiamine & Ginger.  Nu Cat (made by Vetri-Science) has one with digestive enzymes.

So, next time the kitties need calming, sharpen those pencils and get ready to do a little math!

Hmm. I really don't know if I need to be calmer or not. Most of the time I am pretty calm. Except when I get hauled off to the stabby place and -- well, you know. Yes, thanks--I had sorta forgotten about my coat of arms, and it *is* nice to know they'll sorta live forever. And I have my brass ones from Katie and CK, of course.

I wonder, do the Calming Treats make you want to cuddle up with Humans? cause if they do I just KNOW my Human's gonna be trying to sneak some down my gullet somehow.

Too bad I am such a picky eater and tend to shun medicinal-type chews - I could probably use them for my vet trips!

Wow, that is some good research. I found them on Ebay and as I remember they are a little cheaper. I will have to check and see again. I also get the treats for joints for Mahoney and she eats them right up.
Good job Oui Oui doing that reasearch. So did you finally get some treats out of the deal?? Take care.

I buy the Vetri-Science ones from the States and Cheri, bless her, ships them to me, at FAR less than the company's shipping costs to Canada. But I also buy the PetNaturals, which are available locally now, to have on hand in case I run out of the other. I cut them up into 6 tiny pieces for Derry, because without many teeth left, he can't eat them otherwise.

But I didn't look at the small dog ingredient amounts--will do that again the next time I order.

BTW, I usually give Derry two of the Vetri-Science treats a day, and sure as heck hope I'm not harming him, long term. I don't know if they help, really. The Zylkene I have on hand for him does, but that's a short term thing to give (up to a month at a time).

Thanks for the info; I'm glad you didn't find out anything bad about these!

This is very very good information! Most of us are pretty calm and even during occasions when we aren't, Mommy says it's still not very bad. Does the calming treats work immediately or does it only work if taken after a period of time?

Ahh I did not know this through this not surprise us knowing about markups on other things. Though I am normally pretty calm this would be good to know for the annual V-E-T visit.

Wow, you guys really did some extensive research! Thank you for sharing it with us. Moosey wears a calming collar, and that seems to make him a lot less anxious.
