Kitties! Its so true! We are going to be infested with the worse kind of plague - the 17 year locusts! Known to the politically correct as the 17 Year Cicadas, Brood II.
They are BIG, dumb and plentiful!
There really are this many! And we will have them around for a month, starting anytime in May, whenever the ground temperature hits 64 F (17.8 C).
This is no exaggeration! The experts say there are millions per acre. Each bores a hole up through the soil at the base of trees. The number of holes is astounding.
Of course, some neighborhoods are worse than others.
Particularly bad are older ones.
New ones where the soil has been disturbed by building houses are best.
They fly into your hair and face cause they are stupid! Boys tease and chase girls with them. Havoc ensues!
I'm sorry, did this poor victim's parents think this was cute? UGH! And then there are the people who EAT them. Soon strange people with nothing better to do or put in their mouths will be circulating recipes and raving about their "delicate, nutty favor".
Well, at least they don't bite or harm people.
A lot of people are affected. The mom was in denial cause how could 17 years go by so fast?
Did we mention how loud they are? There's this constant droning from the males looking for a mate. It penetrates windows and walls. Again, the experts say it can be equivalent to a lawnmower or circular saw.
This guy has the right attitude!
Here's a Youtube video if you'd like to hear them. They make our little Spring Peepers sound like people in a library.
Or you can go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yhge_b3qFGc
Well, we kitties are SO glad the mom's rant has come to an end! As for us, we are hoping some will sneak into the house cause they look like wonderful toys, better than grasshoppers or crickets. And we can't wait to see if they taste as great as the gastronomes say - delicate, nutty with a buttery texture and exciting crunch! We love to play with our food!

How exciting! I wish we had those here - I just BET they are tasty! You kitties are lucky!
Not HERE! MOL!
We think those look like FUN toys!
I heard about this but went quickly went into denial and completely forgot about it. When we lived in PA, we heard them every summer but thankfully never saw them. I need to see if this is going to happen here in TX. Ugh! I hope it won't be too bad for you guys.
I agree with the yikes! Those boogers do not look like fun!

Our invasion of those loud critters happened 6 years ago. Mom is still getting over it!

Ewwww! We are so skeeved out by the idea of the impending cicada invasion. We hope they do not come into OUR house!
Wow, we are so excited as we live in that cicada band on the map. None of us were alive 17 years ago. Mom says that we get a few of these in the yard every year, but not the amount estimated for this year. They look really yummy to us so we say bring 'em on. Purrs and hugs from the kitties at The Cat on My Head, Lily Olivia, Misty May, Mauricio, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
oh, Oui-Oui! I just love teh Plagues! I can NOT wait! Buggy, buzzy, crunchy, hoppy fun awaits us all on the East Coast. We are oh. so. lucky.
We're dreading them too...
At least they don't kill plants but they sure look nightmarish.
